My Art School

Welcome!

My background is in Fine Art Painting and Secondary Art Education. In addition to my own work as an artist, I love helping others become more confident artists.

Drawing and painting raises self esteem and gives you an incredible vehicle for expressing feelings. I am a firm believer in drawing from observation and learning to tackle the complexities of proportion, perspective, accuracy, etc....but I also believe (perhaps more so) in the idea of art as a powerful vehicle for expressing emotion, and I place a lot of emphasis on developing each individual's personal style, as well as exploring the expressive qualities of light & shade, colour & mark-making.

You will learn how to develop your skills in a range of media whilst working in a friendly, supportive and non-threatening environment. You will have the opportunity to try out different subject matter and processes, such as portraiture, still life, oil painting, pastel painting, etching and monoprinting. My primary objective is for you to have fun learning new skills. The workshops are suitable for all abilities unless otherwise stated (as an experienced teacher I am accustomed to teaching mixed-ability groups and enabling students to work at a pace which is comfortable for them whilst still making progress).

I believe everyone has ability in Art, and I try to make it my job to de-stuff what at first appears to be a very complex process. As such my workshops are relaxed and informal and a sense of humour is encouraged!

Student Testimonials

"Mary’s knowledge and skill level

is excellent..."

"Mary’s Zoom workshops have been a major lifeline for me since the first UK Lockdown. Mary’s knowledge and skill level is excellent and I love her laid back approach in nurturing all levels. I am delighted with my own personal progress and through Mary’s encouragement I continue to develop my own artistic journey. I look forward to visiting her in France one day and experiencing the Plein Air workshops. Thank you for everything Mary. You are brilliant"

"Mary’s workshops are a fabulous way to learn and hone skills in a totally safe and friendly environment. I didn’t think I could draw people but through the workshop I now have the tools and confidence I need to build on what I’ve learned. Thanks Mary"

.".....a fabulous way to learn and hone skills"

".....we all feel valued"

"Mary prepares like the teacher she is and we all feel valued. Work is accessed as the sessions go along and you never feel lost or at sea with the topic. I have learned so much, grown in confidence and it wouldn't have happened without  these zoom sessions. It isn't  techy it's  just click and go. If you love to learn and be part of a group when you do, give one a try. You won't  be sorry. . "

"I hadn't done any life drawing since I left the UK 11 years ago. It was always my favourite thing so this course was unmissable! And it didn't disappoint! It was a super way to spend 4 Friday mornings and Mary is a great teacher, excellent instruction and lots of encouragement!"

"....excellent instruction and lots
